Webster\u2019s Dictionary defines a transition metal as, \u201cany of\nvarious metallic elements (such as chromium, iron, and nickel) that have\nvalence electrons in two shells instead of only one.\u201d But there is a more comprehendible\nversion of this definition. Also known as \u201ctransition elements\u201d, transition\nmetals are basically metals whose electrons of their atoms make the transition\nto filling the \u201cd subshell\u201d or \u201cd sublevel orbital.\u201d As a result, these are\nalso known as \u201cd-block elements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most notable properties of transition metals are\nwide-ranging. They are great conductors of heat and electricity, and even retain\nhigh melting and boiling points. And although they are quite malleable, making them\nperfect for manufacturing, they are also hard, which gives them strength and\ndurability. They are typically grayish in color, and can even retain a metallic,\nsilvery sheen. But because they can form many compounds, they can be altered to\nvarious colors and hues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
