A Guide to Backyard Recycling

What’s in your backyard? Are there items taking up valuable space or aging by the season? What about your garage or shed? Do you have a barn? There are plenty of things we have lying around our properties that we don’t even consider recyclable, like power tools, old metal furniture, and lawn equipment. These aren’t items you would traditionally toss into the dumpster or garbage can, so instead, you forget about them, overlooking their obsolete or void purpose.

Here are some common backyard and summer activity staples that can be recycled at a local Indianapolis scrap metal recycling company for a cash payout:

Lawn Equipment

All sorts of motorized and non-motorized lawn equipment are eligible for recycling. Although you will likely need to provide the transportation for such equipment, most scrap metal recycling centers will accept old, used, or broken lawn equipment. This includes push lawnmowers, ride-on lawnmowers, electric weed whackers, chain saws, pruning shears, irrigation systems, and even metal watering cans.

Pool and Patio Furniture

Any type of metal furniture for the patio, pool, or sunroom can be recycled. Like lawn equipment, you will need to transport furniture yourself to the scrap metal recycling center, but you will earn a pretty profit for it all. Recycle metal patio tables, benches, chairs, recliners, rockers, lawn chairs, lounge chairs, and more! Even your old grill or smoker can be recycled!

Power Tools

Power tools, whether old, broken, or in perfect condition, can be recycled at a local metal recycling center. Tools like chain saws, handheld sanders, drills, electric saws, wrenches, hammers, nails, screws, bits, plumbing, scrap, and anything else made of metal can be recycled.

Above-Ground Pools

Above-ground swimming pools are not known to last a long time. If your steel or aluminum above-ground pool is looking like it’s seen as last summer, recycle it for cash on the spot at your local metal recycling center in Indianapolis, then place your profit towards a newer model above-ground pool!

Canoes

Metal canoes are perfect candidates for recycling. If yours is looking rusty or developing holes and vulnerable spots, upgrade your canoe this summer. Metal fishing boats are also recyclable, so if you have one that is old or broken, recycle it before buying a new one.

Jungle Gyms

5 Types of Bronze Alloys

Bronze is a common metal alloy that we see all around us, in music, manufacturing, electronic technology, construction, art, and more. Many people confuse brass and bronze even though they are different alloys of copper. Although bronze is primarily comprised of copper, but also contains other constituents like aluminum, manganese, tin, and even arsenic. In fact, there are multiple types of bronze alloys.

Common Bronze Alloys

Bronze is a highly useful alloy, so it is no surprise that it is made in different ways for different applications. Although bronze typically contains mostly copper, it can also contain other types of alloys, depending on the type of bronze alloy it is. The top five most common bronze alloys include aluminum bronze, phosphor bronze, silicone bronze, nickel brass, and copper nickel.

Aluminum Bronze

Aluminum bronze is one of the most common types of bronze alloys. This bronze alloy contains between 6% and 12% aluminum. The remaining alloyed constituents include iron and nickel, usually up to 6% of each, and of course copper. Aluminum bronze is strong and has a high resistance to corrosion. It is commonly used to handle materials that are corrosive, such as toxic fluids, and often used in Marine hardware manufacturing.

Phosphor Bronze

Phosphor bronze is also known as tin bronze, and typically contains between 0.5% and 1% tin. As for phosphorus content, phosphor bronze contains a very small amount, typically between 0.01% and 0.35% phosphorous. However, the phosphorus plays an important part in increasing wear resistance and rigidity. Phosphor bronze is highly applicable in construction and manufacturing because it is strong and has a low coefficient of friction. It is also highly resistant to fatigue and fine grained.

Silicone Bronze

Silicone bronze typically contains around 6% silicone and 20% zinc and is used to coat red bronze and red brass. Red bronze typically contains lower concentrations of zinc but is very similar to red brass. Red brass is strong and highly corrosion resistant.

Nickel Brass

Nickel brass is also referred to as nickel silver because the nickel concentration gives the alloy a bright silver-like color. Nickel brass also contains copper and zinc, and therefore has adequate corrosion resistant properties and moderate tensile strength. For this reason, it is commonly used to make musical instruments, optical equipment, food/beverage equipment containers, and similar items.

Copper Nickel

Copper nickel is also called Cupronickel, which can sometimes be confusing to some. Generally containing between 2 percent and 30 percent nickel, Cupronickel is revered for its high resistance to corrosion and oxidation, as well as its incredible tensile strength and resistance to cracking under stress. This makes it perfect for steamy or moist air environments, which is why it is used heavily in marine equipment manufacturing and ship hulls.

Furthermore, it offers moderate ductility, meaning it can be formed and fashioned, even bent or warped, but still not break. After learning these properties of high carbon steel, you can better understand why we use it the way we do!

Applications

The truth is, because the high carbon level in high carbon steel actually makes it quite brittle, it significantly restricts its possible uses. However, this does not mean we do not use plenty of high carbon steel in our society. High carbon steel is used in a wide range of industries and in various fashions. Facts About Steel Pickling

A common, unusable substance that can form on hot-worked steel is known as iron oxide. Iron oxide formation results in a layer of flaky scale that significantly reduces the quality and performance of the metal. In addition to iron oxide scale, several other impurities are also known to degrade hot-worked or hot rolled steel materials, such as rust and similar iron oxide allotropes. To combat iron scale formation and impurity contamination on steel, a special metal dipping process was developed known as steel pickling.

Hot worked steel is dipped into a substance known as pickle liquor, hence the name, to remove all surface impurities that can increase the rate of iron oxide scale, rust, and similar metal corrosion. Pickle liquor can be either sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. Both substances render equivalent efficacy.

Conventional hot worked steel can be decontaminated with so for occur hydrochloric acid bathing, but any steel material with the carbon content higher than 6% will require an additional dipping into an acid bath of nitric, phosphoric, or hydrofluoric acid. Following the acid bath process, treated steel is rinsed clean with water and ready for further treating. Typically, cold working is the next step following steel pickling.

Smooth Clean Surface (SPS) and Flame Cleaning

Smooth clean surface (SPS) is a common alternative to steel pickling that remove surface impurities by pushing sheet-metal through a series of rollers and mechanical abrasives. It is often chosen in place of steel pickling when dipping is structurally incompatible, or the particular type of metal or impending application is vulnerable to acid bathing. Another common alternative to steel pickling is known as flame cleaning. This steel decontamination process uses an oxyacetylene flame that essentially burns off all surface impurities.

List of Ferrous and Nonferrous Metals That Can Be Recycled

There are various types of metal found all around the world, but all metals can be placed into one of two categories: ferrous or non-ferrous. The most distinguishing difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metal is iron. How can you tell the difference between a ferrous and nonferrous metal? If a magnet sticks to the metal, it contains iron, which would make it ferrous.

You see, iron is a magnetic metal, so if a magnetic sticks, it must contain a sufficient amount of iron content. In some cases, the concentration of iron is too weak to attract a magnet, so additional equipment would be necessary in determining its true composition. Precious metals can also be ferrous or nonferrous. They are rare, naturally-occurring elemental metals that have a high economic value.
